Hip Resurfacing Surgery (HRS) Overview

The traditional Total Hip Replacement (THR), invariably have a 'metal on plastic' bearing. These are reasonably successful in elderly relatively inactive patients, but offers unacceptably poor long term outcomes for young, active patients often with unavoidable multiple revision surgeries and associated complications. It is to avoid this unfortunate sequence of events that Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) was developed.

Derek McMinn and Ronan Treacy at the Royal Orthopaedic & Nuffield Hospitals, Birmingham, UK, have more than 9 years experience with 'metal on metal' hip Resurfacing devices which not only offer such patients a conservative and less traumatic alternative to Total Hip replacement but also allows them an unmatched quality of life. 'Metal on Metal' implants have the potential of being 'everlasting' unlike conventional Total Hip Replacement(THR) 'metal on metal' implants which will definitely fail at a rate proportional to the usage level.
